SUMMARY:U.S. and Israel are Pushing the World to the Brink of World War III Speaker: Bahman Azad
DESCRIPTION:Israel’s criminal violations of international law in Palestine\, Lebanon\, Iran\, and other parts of West Asia has increased the possibility of a full-fledged regional war\, which can easily escalate into a global\, possibly nuclear\, confrontation. \nThe U.S. is not in any way restraining the Zionist’s escalation of the war and the continuation of genocide. The imperialist project and the Zionist project are one and the same. Without active U.S. diplomatic\, financial\, and military support\, Zionist Israel would not have been able to commit such crimes. \nThe ever-increasing U.S.-Israel military attacks on the regional resistance movement is based on the awareness of the fact that the defeat of Zionist Israel fundamentally threatens U.S. hegemony in the region and\, through it\, a shift in the global balance of forces against the empire itself. \nOur speaker\, Bahman Azad\, is a retired professor of economics and sociology. His area of research includes the political economy of capitalism and socialism. He is the author of the book: Heroic Struggle\, Bitter Defeat: Factors Contributing to the Dismantling of the Socialist State in the USSR. Bahman is currently the president of the U.S. Peace Council\, a member of the secretariat of the World Peace Council\, and representative of the World Peace Council at the United Nations. He is also a member of the administrative committee of the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC). \n  \nBahman Azad is affiliated with the anti-imperialist\, Iranian “10 Mehr” Group. He was co-chair of Venezuelan Embassy Protectors Defense Committee and is currently serving as the coordinator of the Coalition Against U.S. Foreign Military Bases and co-coordinator of the Hands-Off Syria Coalition. \n

SUMMARY:US Out of Korea!
DESCRIPTION:US Out of Korea!\n\nUS war threats in Korea have reached an all-time high\, sending tensions on the peninsula spiking. In 2023\, the US military conducted 200 days of war games in Korea—some of which rehearsed the “decapitation” of North Korea’s leaders\, and even brought nuclear capable weapons systems to Korea. With the peninsula at the brink of war\, there is an urgent need to organize sustained domestic opposition to US imperialism in Korea from within the belly of the beast.\n\nJoin us to hear an anti-imperialist overview of the current situation on the Korean peninsula and to learn more about the US Out of Korea campaign presented by Paul Liem of the Korea Policy Institute and US Out of Korea Campaign.\n\nBIO\n\nPaul Liem has been active on Korea issues for four decades and has visited North Korea in three different decades.  He is a Director of the Korea Policy Institute and an activist in the US Out of Korea Campaign.

SUMMARY:Western Marxism: How it was Born\, How it Died\, How it can be Reborn - Gabriel Rockhill - Sept 8 2024 10:30 AM Pacific Time
DESCRIPTION:Western Marxism: How It Was Born\, How It Died\, How It Can Be Reborn is a paradigm-shifting book that provides a trenchant critique of the Western left intelligentsia. It reveals how its dominant ideological orientation—characterized by defeatism\, utopianism\, and anti-communism—is rooted in the political economy of imperialism. Internationally acclaimed theorist Domenico Losurdo thus provides a fresh and challenging perspective on purportedly radical thinkers who have been widely promoted in the imperial core \nGabriel Rockhill is a philosopher and activist who has published nine books. He is the Founding Director of the Critical Theory Workshop and Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University.

SUMMARY:Why We Need American Marxism - Carlos Garrido - August 11 2024 -(CONFIRMED)
DESCRIPTION:Why We Need American Marxism \nFor decades American politicians\, the representatives of the country’s oligarchs\, have lied to the American people about their country’s relation to socialism. America has been presented as fundamentally antithetical to socialism\, Marxism\, and communism. Garrido shows how we have\, starting in the early parts of the 19th century\, a homegrown tradition of socialist thought that grounds itself in the most progressive components of American history. This is a tradition which holds that the values 1776 can only be capable of being fully realized in a socialist society. Why We Need American Marxism develops\, within the Marxist framework\, upon this tradition of homegrown socialism and argues that only by developing American Marxism\, and organizations of working people based on it\, can we overcome the crisis we are in and establish a society that is genuinely of\, by\, and for the people. \nCarlos L. Garrido is a Cuban American philosophy instructor at Southern Illinois University\, Carbondale. He is the director of the Midwestern Marx Institute and the author of The Purity Fetish and the Crisis of Western Marxism (2023)\, Marxism and the Dialectical Materialist Worldview (2022)\, and the forthcoming Hegel\, Marxism\, and Dialectics (2024). He has written for dozens of scholarly and popular publications around the world and runs various live-broadcast shows for the Midwestern Marx Institute YouTube. Carlos runs the Philosophy in Crisis Substack.

SUMMARY:Mexico Elections - Jose Luis Granados Ceja
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will focus on the role that public policies that favored the interests of the working class played in the landslide victory for Morena and its allies that resulted in the election of Mexico’s first woman president and supermajority in Congress. The presentation will also look at what we can expect from Sheinbaum’s government. What does she mean when she talks about building the “second floor” of Mexico’s Fourth Transformation? Finally we will discuss\, given the root of the country’s opposition and their marginalization from public life\, where we might expect opposition to come from and what anti-imperialist activists can do to resist US interference. \nBio: José Luis Granados Ceja is an anti-imperialist journalist and political analyst based in Mexico City\, with 20 years of experience covering social movements\, democracy\, elections\, and human rights. He is a staff writer with Venezuelanalysis\, covering regional and international issues\, and is the host of their podcast. He also serves as editor of the Mexico Solidarity Media website and writes a monthly opinion column for the Mexico Solidarity Project Bulletin. Together with Kurt Hackbarth\, he co-hosts the Soberanía podcast\, which provides English-language analysis of politics in Mexico.

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence\, Cure or Curse? - Özgür Narin
DESCRIPTION:Sun June 2nd\, 2024 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtificial Intelligence\, Cure or Curse?\nOn the class structure of AI and the reasons that a productive force appear as a destructive force of capitalism.\nÖzgür Narin\n\n\nArtificial Intelligence\, Cure or Curse? \nOn the class structure of AI and the reasons that a productive force appear as a destructive force of capitalism. \nÖzgür Narin \nMachine Learning Algorithms running on Artificial Neural Networks and particularly reinforcement learning were real breakthroughs of 2010s\, Generative AI and transformers are of 2020s\, all of them developed and spread to various branches. \nAnd nowadays they even talk about an “existential risk” created by AI as if capitalism itself was not the real existential risk for centuries. So we should talk about capitalist production process of AI and the class structure of it. \nHence\, I will first try to analyse the path from machine to machine-learning via Marx’s analysis of machine while considering the alienation as the dual and complementary part of it. Datafication of society is a consequence of this process. The data extractivism of capital transforms the datafication into profit seeking capitalist production as well as parameterisation of the society. So the data gathered in and for the sake of the capitalist production is the input of the capitalist cycle and at the same time actively intervening and manipulating both the labour process data and consumer behaviour data. The data was and is not “as given” in a capitalist production. It would be better to discuss this constant manipulation before “bias” and “ethical issues” in data gathering. AI and constantly produced and reproduced data sets transformed this problem into a new sphere. When we consider the machine learning algorithms using large dataset gathered through all cycles of capitalist social reproduction\, it would be better to consider the alienation of total social labour and this new level of “manipulation”. I will try to discuss this problem and suggest “parameterization of society” vis a vis “datafication of society” considering the distinction between the social form of data collection that is capitalist data extractivism and the objective content of data gathering which is in fact a possibility to organize the social production in a different classless society. The key factor is the subjective side\, that is the intersection of the producers of the AI architecture\, algorithms and the data. \nThe evolution from machinery to AI is actually a social process that is structured by class struggle. So I will try to trace the historical development of producing “learning machines” as a class struggle and point out both sides of the development\, i.e. capitalist side of AI research\, from cybernetics to AI and the Soviet side of it. And finally\, modern class struggle\, workers involved in the production of AI versus Tech-giants… \nLast but not the least\, considering the rather futuristic scenarios of AI\, I will discuss the limits of AGI and creating AI with ‘the ability to transfer learning from one domain to other domains’ namely “AI with the capacity to engage and behave intelligently in a wide variety of contexts”. \nÖzgür Narin is currently a union member and Assistant Professor of Economics at Ordu University. He graduated from the Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University. He studied the capitalist production of science and technology\, particularly innovation and the changing scientific labour process. His current research is on Artificial Intelligence\, “General Intellect” and the alternative reorganization of social production and society. His writing appeared on Monthly Review and Science & Society

SUMMARY:Freeing Labor from its Chains: Indenture\, Chattel Slavery and Wage Slavery in America - Speaker: Peter Fay
DESCRIPTION:Freeing Labor from its Chains: \nIndenture\, Chattel Slavery and Wage Slavery in America \nSpeaker: Peter Fay \n  \nAmerican labor is deindustrialized\, deunionized\, fragmented\, and pauperized. Its debased condition is a prisoner of its form: that of a commodity\, forever cheapening\, like any other. Bereft of political leadership\, labor instinctively reacts in populist protest at its own demise\, rejecting neoliberalism and the “new world order”. In response\, the ruling class shames it as “deplorable”\, “far-right”\, and “Putin’s puppets”. In a world devoid of class identity\, American culture proffers individual identity as the new religion\, as the new “sigh of the oppressed creature\, the heart of a heartless world”. Labor\, the unifying property of humanity\, is hidden in plain sight beneath the media’s vilification of all against all\, a society anatomized by gender and race. \n  \nOur speaker\, Peter Fay\, is a former officer of Steelworkers Local 2285\, and lifelong Communist and public historian\, emphasizes the commonalities and unities of labor\, rather than its disassociation\, across its many historical forms in American history. \n  \nMr. Fay uncovers capital’s driving imperative for the extraction of surplus value while abetting the bifurcation of labor by race. He shares exemplars gleaned from decades of labor research — Eastern Algonquian tribal wampum (‘money-beads’)\, bills of sale of the New England slave trade\, and ledger books of the first industrial sites in America. Capital first relied upon indigenous labor for the colonial economy\, then imported indentured labor from Europe\, later expanding into chattel slavery and free labor. Labor took variegated forms: colonial artisanal labor\, slavery\, formal subsumption of artisans and freeholders by merchants\, and finally free industrial proletarians. But in each form\, capital’s craving for expansion formed and reformed the labor commodity into the one most advantageous for its reproduction. The result was the most massive expansion of capital in human history\, with race as a prime facilitator in the extraction of surplus value. \n  \nMr. Fay concludes with his own experience in the struggles of Black and white steelworkers in the metal forging industry against industrial capital. He uses Marx’s Capital as the essential guide not only for understanding the labor process but for the potentiality and necessity of eliminating wage slavery itself. Only the elimination of labor as a commodity can unleash labor for what Marx called\, “not only a means of life but life’s prime want”. \n  \nBio: \nPeter Fay is a Marxist public historian\, and co-founder of the Newport Middle Passage Project. \nAs a 23-year-old machinist and open Communist\, he ran for the executive board of a 1\,100-member Steelworkers local in Worcester\, Massachusetts winning 2-to-1 despite company red-baiting. He uncovered company ownership of a titanium mine in apartheid South Africa and called for divestment. He also served as an organizer for UE and District 1199.  He advocated for bilinguall education in public schools and an NAACP school desegregation suit. \nAfter a job injury\, he became a software engineer and public historian\, researching New England slavery and early labor movements. Today Mr. Fay publishes histories of labor and Black history\, leads classes on Marxism\, and sits on the boards of several historical societies.
